Scholarships

The Clarkston Farm and Garden Club has provided Clarkston area students with scholarships for more than 40 years. In 2014, with the help of two other contributors, the club was able to award scholarships totaling $9,000 to area students.

One contribution was a generous donation from the family of Karen Simmons. Karen Simmons had received a scholarship from the club in 1966, and returned to Clarkston as a first grade teacher at Bailey Lake Elementary until her retirement. After losing a battle with cancer, the Simmons family contacted us regarding her wish to donate to the Garden Club’s future educational programs. In her honor, a special fund has been identified just for that purpose. The second contribution in 2014 was from a national foundation with community ties to support youth in the Clarkston community.

Students, in their senior year and living in the attendance area of Clarkston Community schools may apply for the Garden Club scholarship on the Chamber of Commerce application. Check dates with the Chamber of Commerce or local area school counselors for the application available in January.

Students are asked to write a paragraph regarding the environmental activities they have been involved with during their youth. Students also submit a list of activities they have participated in both high school and the community as well as two recommendations from adults.
